How this calculator works

Most travel cost calculators throw a number at you and call it a day. The number is usually wrong because it leaves things out — "$5,000 for two weeks in Bali" is fine until you remember flights, transfers, day trips and dinner.

SaveToRoam's calculator uses the same template engine the planning product runs on. Each of the 60+ destinations has an all-in number that includes everything you'll actually pay for: flights ex-Australia in shoulder season, accommodation across every stop, activities and local transport, and daily food. Travel insurance and personal extras stay separate so the math doesn't get muddied.

Enter what you can save each week and how many months you have, and the tool ranks the destinations by what fits.

Good to know

All-in means all-in

Flights, accommodation, activities, local transport, daily food. The number you save toward is the number you actually spend on the trip itself.

Shoulder season pricing

Costs are calibrated for shoulder-season travel — April-May or September-October for most destinations. Peak (school-holiday) flights cost ~20-30 % more; if you can only travel in peak, plan an extra ~3 months of saving.

Family of 4 baseline

Every estimate is for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids). Family of 3 → roughly minus 20 %. Family of 5+ → roughly plus 20 % per extra person. The calculator covers the most common family shape.

Frequently asked

Common questions

How is the trip cost calculated?

Each itinerary's all-in number is a sum of four calibrated components: flights from Australia in shoulder season, accommodation across every stop, activities and local transport, and daily food. The breakdown is shown on each itinerary's detail page.

What's not included in the cost?

Travel insurance (~AUD $150-300 per family), passport renewals, personal spending money, souvenirs, and any premium upgrades (theme park fast-passes, premium economy flights, etc.). These vary widely so we keep them separate from the calibrated number.

Are the costs in AUD?

Yes by default — calibrated for Aussie families flying out of Australia. You can switch the calculator to USD, GBP, EUR, NZD, SGD, JPY or several other currencies via the selector. The underlying math doesn't change, just the display.

Why do similar destinations have different prices?

Flight cost, trip length, and accommodation tier all vary by destination. Vietnam 14 days is cheaper than Japan 14 days because flights and hotels cost less; Iceland 10 days is more than Bali 10 days for the same reason. Each estimate reflects realistic family-of-four travel for that specific destination, not a generic regional average.
