How this calculator works

Generic travel budget tools quote per-person numbers and leave the maths to you. For a family of four that's a multiplication that always lands wrong — kids' flights aren't full-price, hotel rooms don't double for double occupancy, and one car can carry the lot.

SaveToRoam's calculator does the family-of-four math from the start. Two adults + two kids is the default for every cost estimate. Hotel rooms are sized for the family (mostly twin doubles or family rooms), flights are 2 adult + 2 child fares, and daily food is calibrated for four people eating in mid-range cafes and casual restaurants.

If your family is a different shape — 3 people, 5 people, blended — the SaveToRoam Pro product lets you set the family size and re-prices everything. The calculator here uses the family-of-four default.

Good to know

Kids on family fares

Most airlines charge children under 12 around 75 % of the adult fare on long-haul international, full fare domestically. The calculator's flight estimates already reflect this — you don't need to do the maths.

Family-sized rooms

Most destinations price family-of-four accommodation at 1.4-1.7× the per-couple rate (twin doubles, family suites, two-bedroom apartments). Sometimes cheaper than two separate rooms, sometimes the only option. The calculator picks the realistic family-sized number.

Adjust for different sizes

Roughly: family of 3 → -20 % on the calculator's number. Family of 5 → +20 % per extra person. Larger groups → plan a bigger budget than the calculator shows, plus consider apartment rentals over hotels for the meaningful unit-economics jump.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Are these prices realistic for a family of 4?

Yes — every cost estimate in SaveToRoam is calibrated against actual family-of-four bookings out of Australia in shoulder season. Two adults + two kids in mid-range accommodation, mid-range restaurants, family-appropriate activities. Not a generic average split four ways.

Does this work for one parent + kids, or other family shapes?

The calculator default is two adults + two kids. The SaveToRoam Pro product lets you set the family size and re-prices everything — fewer adults means cheaper flights, smaller hotel rooms, less daily food. The free calculator covers the most common shape.

Do the costs scale linearly with kids?

Roughly, but not exactly. Adding a third child usually adds maybe 15-20 % to the all-in cost (one extra plane ticket at a child fare, slightly bigger hotel room, more food) rather than 25 %. The bigger jump comes from accommodation tier — once you outgrow a standard family room, you're into apartment-rental or two-room territory which steps up meaningfully.

What about teenagers vs young kids?

The calculator's family-of-four baseline assumes kids old enough to pay full child fares (above 2 years old) and eat at restaurants. Pre-toddler families typically pay less for flights (lap infant) and food but slightly more for cots and stroller-friendly hotels. The Pro product handles ages explicitly; the calculator uses an averaged 6-12 year old assumption.
