10 Days in the Caribbean
Swimming with sea turtles in turquoise water, rum punch on a catamaran, volcanic mud baths the kids won't stop talking about, and beaches so perfect they look AI-generated. Ten nights across Barbados and St Lucia — two Caribbean islands connected by a short flight, where the water is warm year-round and the reggae never stops.

Your stop-by-stop itinerary
2 stops across 10 nights. Each one chosen so you experience a different side of Caribbean.
Stop
01
Barbados
4 nightsFly into Bridgetown (BGI) from Sydney via Los Angeles or London (24-30h total). Taxi from airport to west coast hotels ($30-40, 30 min). Rent a car ($50-60/day) or use local buses (BBD$2/ride, ~$1 USD). Barbados is small — nothing is more than 45 min away.
Highlights
- Sea turtle snorkelling — swim with hawksbill and green turtles at Carlisle Bay or Paynes Bay. Glass-bottom boat + snorkel tour ($75/person, 2-3h). Turtles are habituated and swim within arm''s reach
- Oistins Fish Fry — Friday night open-air seafood feast. Grilled mahi-mahi, flying fish, and macaroni pie. The island''s best family night out ($8-12/person). Live music, dancing, kids running everywhere
- Harrison''s Cave — underground tram tour through stalactite-filled limestone caverns ($40/adult, $20/child 4-12). The cathedral cavern with its waterfall is spectacular
- Bathsheba Beach (east coast) — dramatic rocky coastline, Atlantic waves crashing on mushroom-shaped rock formations. Swimming is dangerous but the rock pools are safe for wading and photos
- Carlisle Bay marine park — free snorkelling over shipwrecks in 4-6m of crystal water. Six wrecks visible, turtles, tropical fish. Bring your own gear or rent ($15/set). Best calm-water snorkel in the Caribbean
- Crane Beach — Barbados'' most famous beach, pink-tinged sand, cliff backdrop. Public access via 98 steps ($5 elevator if staying elsewhere). Gentler waves than the east coast
Local tips
- Stay on the west coast (Platinum Coast) — Holetown, Mullins Bay, or Paynes Bay. The Caribbean Sea side has calm, clear water perfect for family swimming. The east (Atlantic) coast has dramatic scenery but dangerous currents.
- Rent a car for 2 of the 4 days — the island is only 34 km long and driving is left-hand (same as Australia). Exploring Harrison''s Cave, Bathsheba, and Oistins Fish Fry by car is easy and much cheaper than taxis.
- Barbados is more expensive than most Caribbean islands — it''s developed and British-influenced. Budget $100-150/day for a family on food + activities beyond the hotel. The Friday Oistins Fish Fry is the best-value family dinner on the island.
Suggested stayFamily beach resort or apartment on the west coast (Platinum Coast)
Stop
02
St Lucia
6 nightsFly Barbados → St Lucia (40 min, $100-150/pp on InterCaribbean or Caribbean Airlines, 2-3 daily flights). Taxi from Hewanorra airport (UVF) to Soufrière ($70, 1.5h — the road is winding but scenic). Return flight St Lucia → Barbados → hub → Sydney.
Highlights
- Pitons catamaran day trip — sail between the two volcanic peaks, snorkel at Anse Chastanet reef, stop at Soufrière sulphur springs mud bath, rum punch included. The ultimate Caribbean family day ($130-145/person, 6h)
- Sulphur Springs — the world''s only drive-in volcano. Steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and a therapeutic volcanic mud bath where the whole family emerges grey-brown and laughing ($10/person entry, $5 mud bath)
- Anse Chastanet snorkelling — coral reef right off the beach, 150+ fish species. Consistently rated the best snorkelling beach in the Caribbean. Free beach access, $15 gear rental
- Sugar Beach — white sand beach framed by both Pitons. Exclusive but stunning. Public access is free (walk from the road); resort day passes available ($50-80/person with lounger + towel)
- Rainforest zip-line adventure — 12 lines through the rainforest canopy, including a 400m run above the valley ($80-95/person, age 5+). Combines adrenaline with wildlife spotting
- Tet Paul Nature Trail — easy 45-min guided walk to a stairway viewpoint between the Pitons. The best Piton photo spot on the island ($10/person). Manageable for all ages
- Marigot Bay — sheltered natural harbour, boat taxi to the beach ($2/pp), waterfront restaurants. Locals call it ''the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean''
Local tips
- Stay in Soufrière for the Pitons, volcano, and best snorkelling — it''s the scenic heart of St Lucia. Rodney Bay in the north has more restaurants and nightlife but you''ll spend 90 min driving to every Piton-area activity.
- Book the catamaran Pitons tour on your first full day — it combines snorkelling, mud bath, and sailing in one trip and orients you to the island. If seasick, do the Piton sites by car instead (accessible by road but less magical).
- St Lucia roads are steep, narrow, and winding — if you rent a car, get a 4WD and expect slow progress. Many families prefer taxi/hotel transfers ($20-40 per trip) over the stress of mountain driving with kids in the back.
Suggested stayFamily resort or villa in Soufrière, Marigot Bay, or Rodney Bay
