Caribbean Island-Hop for ~AU$14,900 (10 Days): Barbados & St Lucia Without the Cruise Ship Crowds
Most families experience the Caribbean through the window of a cruise ship — two hours at a port, a quick beach photo, then back on board for the buffet. This itinerary is the opposite of that: 10 days split across Barbados and St Lucia, two islands with completely different personalities, where your kids swim in turquoise water every single day, eat flying fish and macaroni pie from a street stall in Bridgetown, hike between the Pitons in St Lucia, and fall asleep to the sound of waves in a beachfront villa. The Caribbean without the cruise-ship crowds is a fundamentally different holiday — slower, warmer, and infinitely more memorable.

Why These Two Islands?
Barbados: Calm west-coast beaches (safe for younger kids), strong culinary culture (street food is legit), English-speaking, stable. Fish cakes and cutter sandwiches (soft-bread snacks) are incredible and cheap. Harrison's Cave is a unique inland experience—rainforest waterfall you can swim in. It's easy.
St Lucia: The Pitons (two dramatic volcanic peaks) are iconic and worth the hike. The island feels wilder, more Caribbean-authentic. St Lucia's snorkeling is excellent (reefs are close to shore). Rodney Bay is touristy but organized—good base for a 6-night stay. Castries markets are chaotic, colorful, and fun for older kids.
Why island-hop? You avoid the "trapped in one resort" vibe. Two islands = different vibes, different water temps, different food. Plus, your family remembers two places, not one blur of beach.
Bottom Line
~AU$14,900 (USD $9,456) for 10 days covers flights, accommodation, food, and activities for a family of 4, with room for water sports and market days.
The Caribbean is pricier than Central America, but you get reliability, English everywhere, zero malaria risk, and that legendary Caribbean pace. Barbados is your cultural/culinary anchor; St Lucia is your adventure/pitons payoff. Catamaran snorkeling and Pitons hikes are the highlight experiences—they're worth the spend. Food is seafood-heavy, fresh, and good value if you eat where locals do (avoid resort restaurants).
Hurricane season (June–October) sounds scary but isn't in practice—storms are rare, and prices drop 20–30%. The Caribbean year-round averages 80–86°F.
