Fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP, also called Proserpine — the cheapest option, AU$420-600 pp from SYD/MEL/BNE shoulder). Catch the Whitsunday Transit shuttle to Airlie Beach (~40 min, AU$80 family one-way). Skip the hire car — Airlie is walkable end-to-end and tours pick up from the marina.

Local tips

  • 💡Stinger season runs November-May — the Lagoon is netted year-round but ocean swimming requires a stinger suit (provided on reef tours). Box jellyfish and irukandji are present and dangerous; never swim outside stinger nets.
  • 💡Airlie Beach hotels are walkable to the Lagoon, the marina, and tour pickup points — you don't need a hire car here. Save the AU$80/day rental for Cairns trips, not the Whitsundays.
  • 💡The Whitehaven Beach full-day tour is the unmissable activity — book online 2+ weeks ahead in school holidays. ZigZag is the smaller-boat (max 22 pax), most kid-friendly option; Cruise Whitsundays is the bigger boat with more amenities.
