Your stop-by-stop itinerary

4 stops across 12 nights. Each one chosen so you experience a different side of Sri Lanka.

Stop

01

Kandy

3 nightsFly direct to Colombo (CMB) from Sydney (10h 20m, SriLankan UL or Singapore Airlines via SIN). Your pre-booked driver meets you at CMB and drives 3 hrs to Kandy (the arrival day — kids sleep in the van). Apply for the Sri Lanka ETA visa online 72 hrs before departure.

Highlights

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — Sri Lanka's holiest Buddhist site, evening puja ceremony
  • Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya — 60 hectares, bat colony, orchid house
  • Kandyan Cultural Centre dance show — fire walking, drumming, 90 min evening
  • Kandy Lake lakeside walk and the Bahirawakanda Buddha statue
  • Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage day trip (1 hr west)
  • Udawatta Kele Royal Forest Park for monkey and bird spotting

Local tips

  • Cover arms and legs at the Temple of the Tooth — no shorts, no sleeveless tops. Shoes off at the entrance. Evening puja (6:30 pm) is the most atmospheric time.
  • The Kandy cultural dance show is cheesy but kids love the fire walkers — go on your first Kandy evening while the jet lag still works in your favour.
  • Skip Pinnawala if you've been to ethical Asian elephant sanctuaries elsewhere (Thailand, Bali) — Pinnawala is a tourist show, not a conservation project. Minneriya safari in the next stop is the real deal.

Suggested stayFamily hotel near Kandy Lake or the Temple of the Tooth

Stop

02

Sigiriya (Dambulla)

2 nightsDrive from Kandy (2h 30m north with your driver). Pass through Matale spice garden for a morning stop en route.

Highlights

  • Sigiriya Rock Fortress climb — 1,200 steps, 2 hrs, 5th-century cave murals and the Lion's Gate
  • Dambulla Cave Temples — 5 caves with 153 Buddha statues, Golden Temple below
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park elephant safari (afternoon jeep, dry season Jun–Sep sees 200+ elephants gathering)
  • Pidurangala Rock (sunset alternative to Sigiriya — easier climb, better view OF Sigiriya)
  • Village cycling tour with lunch at a local home

Local tips

  • Climb Sigiriya at sunrise (6:30 am start) — dawn light, cooler temperatures, less crowd. Kids 6+ can do it. Pack water and hats. Entry is ~$30 USD per adult (kids discounted).
  • Pidurangala Rock is the insider alternative — same area, easier climb, views of Sigiriya itself at sunset. Do Pidurangala day 2 if you skip Sigiriya climb with young kids.
  • Minneriya safari runs 3pm–6pm. 'The Gathering' (Jun–Sep) is one of Asia's great wildlife spectacles — 200+ elephants at the tank. In wet season they disperse — book with a reputable jeep operator who knows where the elephants actually are.

Suggested stayFamily hotel near Sigiriya Rock or Habarana

Stop

03

Ella

3 nightsDrive to Kandy station (2h 30m), then take the Kandy → Ella scenic train (6-7 hrs through the hill country, $8 pp observation car). This is one of the world's great train journeys. Your driver collects the van and meets you at Ella station.

Highlights

  • Kandy → Ella scenic train — tea plantations, waterfalls, cloud forest, the most photographed railway in Asia
  • Nine Arches Bridge — 30-min walk from town, photo spot as the blue train crosses at ~9:45 am daily
  • Little Adam's Peak — 1 hr easy hike, best family summit in Sri Lanka
  • Lipton's Seat tea estate day trip — panoramic tea country views from where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his empire
  • Ravana Falls and Ravana Ella Cave (20 min drive)
  • Ella Rock (harder hike, 2.5 hrs, for kids 10+)

Local tips

  • Book the Kandy → Ella train 2nd class observation car seats 30 days ahead through 12go.asia or a local agent — the car sells out daily.
  • Stand at the open-doorway of the train for the classic 'hair blowing in the wind' photo but keep a tight grip on kids — the train doesn't go fast but there's no barrier.
  • Little Adam's Peak over Ella Rock for families — 1-hour easy climb to the same view, kids manage it no problem. Ella Rock is 2.5 hrs and requires guides (which is its own hassle).

Suggested stayFamily cabin in the tea country

Stop

04

Mirissa

4 nightsDrive from Ella to Mirissa (4h, 175 km south via Wellawaya and the south coast expressway). Option: day trip to Yala National Park for leopard safari en route — dawn departure from Ella, afternoon arrival in Mirissa.

Highlights

  • Mirissa whale watching — dawn boats Nov–April see blue whales, sperm whales, dolphins
  • Galle Fort — UNESCO walled city 45 min west, ramparts walk at sunset
  • Weligama Beach surf lesson (30 min east — best beginner surf in Sri Lanka)
  • Unawatuna Beach day — calmer swimming than Mirissa, rope swing, snorkelling
  • Yala National Park leopard safari day trip (from Mirissa, 2h drive, full day)
  • Turtle hatchery visit at Kosgoda (en route Mirissa → CMB on departure day)

Local tips

  • Whale watching: dawn 6:30 am boats, 3-4 hr trip, Nov–April only. Book a smaller boat (12 passengers or fewer) — big 50-passenger boats chase whales aggressively, small operators keep distance.
  • Mirissa has rip currents — kids swim between the flags at the main beach only. Unawatuna is safer for young kids.
  • On departure day, drive Mirissa → Colombo Airport via the Southern Expressway (2.5 hrs). Allow 4 hrs with traffic buffer. Stop at a Kosgoda turtle hatchery en route for a kid-friendly last activity.

Suggested stayFamily beachfront hotel in Mirissa
