01
Barcelona
4 nightsFly into Barcelona El Prat (BCN) via a Middle East or Asian hub — Emirates via Dubai, Singapore Airlines via Singapore, or Qatar via Doha are the most common routings (~22-24h total). Aerobus from the airport to Placa Catalunya is EUR 7.75 pp one-way, 35 min.
Highlights
- Sagrada Familia — book timed tickets online, Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece is jaw-dropping inside
- Park Guell — Gaudi's mosaic park with city views, timed entry for the Monumental Zone
- La Rambla + Boqueria Market — walk the famous boulevard and taste your way through the market stalls
- Barceloneta Beach — swimming and sandcastles with the city skyline behind you
- Camp Nou stadium tour — for football-mad kids, FC Barcelona's home ground
- Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic) — medieval lanes, street performers, ice cream at every corner
Local tips
- Book Sagrada Familia tickets 2-4 weeks ahead — they sell out. Tower access is optional but worth it for the views. Morning light through the stained glass is the magic moment.
- Barcelona's T-Casual card (10 trips, EUR 11.35) covers metro, bus, and tram across Zone 1 — far cheaper than single tickets for a family.
- Pickpockets are a real issue on La Rambla and the metro. Use a cross-body bag, keep phones in front pockets, and brief the kids before you go. It's not dangerous — just opportunistic.
Suggested stayFamily apartment in Eixample or near Barceloneta Beach

02
Valencia
2 nightsRenfe AVE high-speed train Barcelona Sants → Valencia Joaquin Sorolla — 3h, EUR 25-50 pp if booked early. Book at renfe.com 60 days ahead for the cheapest fares.
Highlights
- City of Arts and Sciences — Calatrava's futuristic complex with the Oceanografic aquarium (Europe's largest), Hemisferic IMAX, and Science Museum
- Turia Gardens — 9 km of parkland in a former riverbed, with playgrounds, bike paths, and Gulliver Park (giant climbing sculpture)
- Malvarrosa Beach — wide, shallow, calm Mediterranean swimming
- Central Market (Mercado Central) — Art Nouveau building, fresh juice, jamon, cheese, pastries
- Bioparc Valencia — immersive zoo without visible barriers, African savanna habitat
Local tips
- Valencia is the hidden gem of the trip — significantly cheaper than Barcelona with equally good beaches and food. Budget about 30% less per day here.
- The Oceanografic at the City of Arts and Sciences is the single best family attraction in Valencia — allow 3-4 hours. The combined ticket with the Science Museum saves EUR 5 pp.
- Horchata (tiger nut milk) and fartons (sugar-coated pastry sticks) at Horchateria Santa Catalina is a Valencia-only experience kids love.
Suggested stayFamily apartment near the old town or Turia Gardens

03
Madrid
3 nightsRenfe AVE high-speed train Valencia → Madrid Atocha — 1h 40m, EUR 20-40 pp booked early. Madrid's metro covers everything.
Highlights
- Royal Palace of Madrid — Europe's largest royal palace still in use, 3,418 rooms (guided tours available)

- Gran Via + Puerta del Sol — Madrid's main shopping street and the centre of Spain, street performers
- Mercado de San Miguel — gourmet tapas market in a beautiful iron-and-glass building near Plaza Mayor
- Santiago Bernabeu stadium tour — Real Madrid's home, football fans will want this
Local tips
- Menu del dia (set lunch menu) is Spain's secret family weapon — EUR 12-18 for a three-course meal with drink and bread at most restaurants. Always cheaper and better value than ordering a la carte.
- Madrid's Retiro Park on a Sunday morning is the local family experience — rent a rowing boat on the lake (EUR 6 for 45 min), watch the puppet show at the open-air theatre, and grab churros con chocolate at San Gines (open since 1894).
- Madrid is hot in summer (35-40C in July-August). Shoulder season (May, Sep-Oct) is ideal — same sunny weather, 25-30C, and everything is open.
Suggested stayFamily apartment near Sol or Retiro Park

04
Seville
3 nightsRenfe AVE high-speed train Madrid Atocha → Sevilla Santa Justa — 2h 30m, EUR 25-45 pp booked early.
Highlights
- Real Alcazar — Moorish palace with stunning tiled courtyards and gardens, Game of Thrones Dorne scenes filmed here
- Plaza de Espana — the semicircular plaza with tiled alcoves representing every Spanish province, free to visit, row boats on the canal
- Seville Cathedral + Giralda tower climb — the world's largest Gothic cathedral, views from the bell tower
- Flamenco show — Seville is the birthplace of flamenco, family-friendly tablaos run early evening shows
- Triana neighbourhood — cross the bridge to the ceramic quarter, riverside tapas, authentic local feel
- Metropol Parasol (Las Setas) — the world's largest wooden structure, rooftop walkway at sunset
Local tips
- Book the Real Alcazar online at least 1 week ahead — it sells out faster than the Alhambra in peak season. Morning entry (9-10am) is best before the heat and crowds.
- Seville is the hottest city in Europe in summer — 40C+ in July-August is normal. Visit in May (Feria de Abril aftermath, warm but bearable) or October (still 25-28C, perfect).
- An early-evening flamenco show at a tablao (Casa de la Memoria, Casa del Flamenco) is a must — family-friendly shows start at 7pm, last 1 hour, EUR 20-25 pp.

- Alcazaba + Gibralfaro Castle — Moorish fortress with views over the port, easy climb
- Nerja caves + Burriana Beach — 1h east of Malaga, caves + the best family beach on the Costa del Sol
Local tips
- The Costa del Sol is the wind-down finish to the trip — two days of beach and tapas after the city-hopping. Don't over-plan; swim, eat, repeat.
- Chiringuitos (beach restaurants) serve fresh-grilled sardines on a stick (espetos) — the Malaga speciality, EUR 3-5 per portion. Best at Pedregalejo beach, 15 min east of Malagueta.
- If flying out of Malaga, the airport is on the suburban train line — 12 min, EUR 1.80 pp from Malaga Centro. Don't take a taxi.
