Taiwan is the under-searched East Asia destination that every Australian family who's been there recommends — world-class food, Taipei 101 and Shilin Night Market, the marble cliffs of Taroko Gorge, high-speed trains that run every 15 minutes, and a food scene that rivals anywhere in Asia. Direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne, visa-free for 90 days, and prices roughly 40% less than Japan for a comparable family experience. The problem is that Google results for Taiwan family costs are thin — solo backpacker blogs, luxury business-travel packages, but almost nothing telling a family of four what a 10-night round-island trip actually looks like in 2026.
The short answer: budget AU$9,000–11,000 all-in for a family of four on a 10-night Taiwan trip with mid-range hotels, HSR between cities, and shoulder-season direct flights. The SaveToRoam template sits at TWD 190,000 (~AU$9,310) — about 40% cheaper than our Japan template (AU$15,600) with a shorter direct flight, a food scene that genuinely rivals Japan, and the kind of scenic variety (gorge, lake, coast, hi-tech city) that takes Japan 2+ weeks to cover.
The Trip Outline: 10 Nights, Four Cities
The classic Taiwan round-island family loop, connected by HSR and TRA trains:
- Taipei, 4 nights — arrival base. Taipei 101, National Palace Museum, Shilin Night Market, Maokong Gondola, Elephant Mountain, day trip to Jiufen.
- Hualien (Taroko Gorge), 2 nights — east coast marble cliffs. 2h 15m scenic TRA train from Taipei. Full-day Taroko Gorge shuttle tour, Qingshui Cliffs drive, Dongdamen Night Market.
- Sun Moon Lake, 2 nights — central mountain lake. Hop-on-hop-off boat, Sun Moon Lake Ropeway cable car, Formosan Aboriginal Cultural Village, Wenwu Temple.
- Kaohsiung, 2 nights — southern city finish. Lotus Pond and the Dragon/Tiger Pagodas, Formosa Boulevard metro's "Dome of Light", Cijin Island ferry, Pier-2 Art Center.
Why 10 nights is the minimum: Taiwan is small (394 km long) but each region is genuinely different. 7 nights forces you to drop one base; 10 nights lets you do the full loop with a day in hand at each city for weather or kid energy.
Why end at Kaohsiung, not loop back to Taipei: Kaohsiung → Taipei Airport is 1h 45m on the HSR, same cost as looping back to a Taipei hotel on night 10. Ends the trip at the southern coast rather than an airport-night hotel change.
How the Mid-Range Template Breaks Down (TWD)
TWD 1 ≈ AU$0.049 throughout. Loosely: TWD 100,000 ≈ AU$4,900.
Accommodation (~TWD 43,600 for 10 nights)
- Taipei, 4 nights — TWD 4,500/night family hotel in Zhongshan (MRT red line) or Songshan. Target: Just Sleep Linsen, Caesar Metro Taipei, Hotel Papa Whale, The Okura Prestige (upper). Weekend rates ~40% higher.
- Hualien, 2 nights — TWD 4,000/night family hotel near the city centre. Target: Taroko Silks Place (upper, inside the park), Chateau de Chine Hualien, Parkview Hotel.
- Sun Moon Lake, 2 nights — TWD 5,000/night lakeside family resort. Target: Fleur de Chine, Del Lago Hotel, Sun Moon Lake Hotel. Ita Thao village (indigenous cultural side) is quieter than Shueishe.
- Kaohsiung, 2 nights — TWD 3,800/night family hotel near Formosa Boulevard metro or the Love River. Target: 85 Sky Tower Hotel, Silks Club Kaohsiung, City Suites.
Total: TWD 43,600 (~AU$2,136).
Flights from Australia (~TWD 73,500 shoulder)
- Sydney → Taipei (TPE) direct on China Airlines, Starlux Airlines, or Qantas (9h direct): AU$800–1,300 per person return shoulder. Family total: AU$3,200–5,200.
- Melbourne → Taipei direct on China Airlines or via Sydney: AU$900–1,400 pp shoulder.
- Via HKG or SIN on Cathay / Singapore Airlines: similar pricing, more layover options.
Template assumption: TWD 73,500 (~AU$3,600) shoulder SYD/MEL family.
Inter-city transport (~TWD 14,700)
Taiwan's transport network is a family's dream:
- HSR Taipei → Taichung (for Sun Moon Lake transfer): TWD 700 pp × 4 = TWD 2,800. Book 28 days ahead for the 10% early-bird discount.
- Bus/shuttle Taichung HSR → Sun Moon Lake: TWD 200 pp × 4 = TWD 800
- Shuttle Sun Moon Lake → Chiayi → HSR Kaohsiung: ~TWD 1,600 family
- HSR Kaohsiung → TPE Airport (departure): TWD 1,490 pp × 4 = TWD 5,960
- TRA regular train Taipei → Hualien (scenic coastal, 2h 15m): TWD 440 pp × 4 = TWD 1,760
- TRA Hualien → Taipei: TWD 1,760
Daily family budget (~TWD 30,000 for 10 days)
Taiwan is genuinely cheap for food — night markets especially:
- Food: TWD 1,800–3,000/day family of 4. Night market small-eats TWD 50-100 each; sit-down family dinners TWD 800-1,500.
- Local transport (MRT + buses): TWD 300/day (EasyCard handles it all)
- Water + snacks + bubble tea: TWD 200/day
- Template: TWD 3,000/day × 10 = TWD 30,000 (~AU$1,470)
Activities (~TWD 15,000)
- Taipei 101 Observatory + Skywalk: TWD 2,500 family
- National Palace Museum: TWD 1,400 family (closed Mondays)
- Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall: FREE (changing of the guard hourly)
- Maokong Gondola + tea plantation tasting: TWD 800 family

- Cijin Island ferry + fort + lighthouse: TWD 200 family

Template: TWD 15,000. Families adding a Kenting National Park day trip (south coast beaches) land at TWD 18,000.
Other (~TWD 10,600)

- EasyCard deposits (4 × TWD 100) + initial load: TWD 400
- Airport MRT transfer Taoyuan ↔ Taipei (2 ways): TWD 640 family
- SIM/eSIM (Taiwan Mobile, Chunghwa): TWD 500
- Buffer (markets, bubble tea, Shilin shopping): TWD 2,000
Total All-In Cost

|---|---|---|
| Flights (SYD/MEL direct shoulder) | 73,500 | 3,600 |
| Accommodation 10 nights (4 cities) | 43,600 | 2,136 |
| Inter-city transport (HSR + TRA + buses) | 14,700 | 720 |
| Daily family budget 10 days × TWD 3,000 | 30,000 | 1,470 |

| Insurance + EasyCard + transfer + SIM + buffer | 10,600 | 520 |

| Peak (Lunar NY late Jan/Feb) | ~220,000 | ~AU$10,780 |
The TWD 190,000 template sits realistically mid-band for shoulder season. Avoid Chinese New Year (late January / early February) at all costs — prices triple, trains book out weeks ahead, many restaurants and businesses close. Template buffer does not cover LNY travel.
When to Go
| Season | Month | Weather | Crowds | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar–May | 18–26°C, Alishan cherry blossom late Mar | MED | MED |
| Summer | Jun–Aug | 28–35°C humid, typhoons Jul–Sep | MED | MED |
| Autumn | Sep–Nov | 22–28°C, stable, low humidity | MED | MED |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | 12–22°C north, warm south | PEAK (LNY) | HIGH (LNY) |
Best AU school-holiday windows:
- April (Easter) — spring, mild, Alishan cherry blossoms peaking late March to mid-April. Catalogue sweet spot.
- September/October — autumn, stable weather, lower prices. Strong second choice.
- July (Term 3) — hot and humid, 30% of days have a typhoon trailing through. Book flexible-refund accommodation for Hualien and Sun Moon Lake in case of trail closures.
- December (pre-Lunar NY) — cool but workable, lowest flight prices outside LNY weeks.
- Lunar New Year (late Jan / early Feb) — AVOID. Business closures, transport jams, prices triple.
Why Taiwan Over Japan for a First-Time East Asia Family Trip
Compared to our Japan template (~AU$15,600 for 14 nights):
- AU$6,000+ cheaper total — accommodation and food roughly 40% less, daily spend genuinely cheap
- Shorter flights — 9h direct SYD-TPE vs 9h SYD-TYO (similar)
- Simpler logistics — 1 HSR line vs Japan's 4 private rail networks
- Similar food quality — if anything, Taiwan's night market food culture is more kid-friendly than Japan's sit-down omakase
- Less crowded tourist infrastructure — Taipei 101 is never a 90-minute queue; Shibuya Crossing at peak is
Where Japan wins:
- More iconic tourist moments — Kyoto temples, Osaka Castle, Fushimi Inari (Taiwan has Longshan Temple and Wenwu Temple but nothing quite at Kyoto scale)
- Cherry blossom reputation — Japan is the global sakura destination; Taiwan's Alishan blossoms are lesser-known
- Train network depth — Japan's JR Pass + private lines beat Taiwan's single HSR + TRA system
Pick on what your family wants: Japan for cultural icons + rail adventure, Taiwan for food + scenery + value.
