Peru Family Trip for AU$15,700 (12 Days): Machu Picchu, Lima Food & Sacred Valley

Matt·20 April 2026·7 min read

The train rounds a final bend, the clouds part, and Machu Picchu appears — 500-year-old stone terraces clinging to a mountain ridge above the clouds, llamas grazing on the grass between ancient walls, and your kids standing there with their mouths open in a way that no screen has ever achieved. That single moment makes Peru the most bucket-list-worthy family trip in South America. But Peru is far more than Machu Picchu: Lima's food scene rivals any city on earth (and you can eat a world-class ceviche for USD $8), the Sacred Valley has alpaca farms and kid-friendly Inca ruins at gentler altitudes, and Cusco's cobblestone streets mix Spanish colonial architecture with Inca stonework so precisely fitted you can't slide a credit card between the blocks.

The short answer: budget AU$15,700 all-in (USD $10,000) for a family of four on a 12-night Peru trip with mid-range hotels, the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu, and shoulder-season flights from Australia. Lima, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco — food, mountains, and ancient ruins.

Trip Outline

Lima → Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu → Cusco (3–3–2–4 nights)

  • Days 1–3: Lima. Arrive LIM, explore Miraflores cliffs, visit museums (Larco, Peruvian Textile), cook a Peruvian cooking class, eat at casual ceviches and markets.
  • Days 4–6: Sacred Valley. 1-hour flight to Cusco, drive to Ollantaytambo or Urubamba. Alpaca farms, Ollantaytambo ruins, hiking, acclimatize to altitude (11,000 ft).
  • Days 7–8: Machu Picchu. Train to Aguas Calientes (day 7), early train up to Machu Picchu (day 8), return to Cusco via train.
  • Days 9–12: Cusco. Rest after altitude, explore Cusco's plazas, visit Sacsayhuamán (fortress ruins above the city), shop at markets, adjust for return.

Flights

AU$2,200–$2,700 per person (return, economy, Sydney/Melbourne)

  • Sydney/Melbourne → Lima (LIM) costs USD $750–$950 (~AU$1,178–$1,492) with connections via US hubs (LAX, Miami, Dallas).
  • Book 10–12 weeks ahead. May–June is shoulder season and dry season combined—excellent time.
  • Family of 4: AU$8,800–$10,800.

Tip: Fly into LIM. Exit from LIM as well (no open-jaw needed). Cusco is high-altitude (11,000 ft); spending 3 nights in Lima first = natural acclimatization for the kids.

Accommodation

USD $100–$130 per night (~AU$157–$204)

Lima (3 nights, USD $120/night): Miraflores or Barranco neighborhoods. Mid-range hotels with breakfast included are standard. Avoid ultra-budget; Lima's security is better in established hotel areas. Budget USD $360 (~AU$565).

Sacred Valley (3 nights, USD $100/night): Ollantaytambo or Urubamba towns. Small hotels, haciendas, and family-run inns. Ollantaytambo has the best ruins walkability; Urubamba is flatter and better for kids with altitude sensitivity. Budget USD $300 (~AU$471).

Machu Picchu region (2 nights, USD $130/night): Aguas Calientes (the town at Machu Picchu's base). One night before (arrival), one night after. Mid-range is fine—you're sleeping, not sightseeing. Budget USD $260 (~AU$408).

Cusco (4 nights, USD $100/night): Cusco's San Blas neighborhood has family hotels and local charm. Plaza de Armas area is more touristy but central. Budget USD $400 (~AU$628).

Total accommodation: USD $1,320 (~AU$2,072).

Altitude & Kids: The Real Talk

Cusco is at 11,150 feet (3,400 m). Machu Picchu is at 7,970 feet (2,430 m)—lower, but the climb is steep. Smart altitude strategy:

  • Arrive in Lima first. Spend 3 nights at sea level (0 ft). Natural acclimatization.
  • Sacred Valley next. Ollantaytambo is 9,160 ft—lower than Cusco. Kids adjust gradually.
  • Machu Picchu third. Actually easier altitude-wise (lower elevation), but don't rush it.
  • Cusco last. By day 9, you've been ascending slowly. Kids handle it.

Avoid ibuprofen before acclimatization—it masks symptoms. Coca tea (mild, safe) is fine. Walk slowly. Eat carbs. Drink water constantly. Most kids 8+ have zero issues with this schedule; younger kids might be fussy for 1–2 days.

Bottom Line

AU$15,700 (USD $10,000) covers flights, accommodation, food, and Machu Picchu for a family of 4, with contingency for altitude meds and extra meals.

Lima's food scene is genuinely world-class—eating well costs USD $15–20 per person at sit-down restaurants. The Sacred Valley is underrated; alpaca farms and easy ruins walks keep kids engaged. Machu Picchu is as stunning as the photos suggest, but book your train tickets 6–8 weeks ahead (they sell out). The Peruvian sol's strength means your dollars stretch further than in Mexico or Central America.

The biggest wild card is Machu Picchu train availability and price—it fluctuates. Book early. Everything else is predictable and reasonably priced.
