How Much Does a Family Trip to Laos Cost in 2026?

Matt·20 April 2026·6 min read

Laos is Southeast Asia's quietest secret for families — a country where monks collect alms at dawn in streets lined with French-colonial architecture, kids can kayak through limestone karst scenery that rivals Halong Bay, and the pace of life is so gentle that even toddlers relax. It's dramatically cheaper than Thailand, far less touristy than Vietnam, and almost completely off the radar for Australian families — which is exactly why it's such a find.

The short answer: budget USD $5,000–7,000 all-in (~AU$7,850–11,000) for a family of four on a 10-night Laos trip with mid-range boutique hotels, Kuang Si waterfalls, and shoulder-season flights. The SaveToRoam template sits at USD $5,200 (~AU$8,165) — one of the cheapest family trips in the entire catalogue, below Cambodia and on par with Bali.

The Trip Outline: 10 Nights, Three Stops

  • Luang Prabang, 5 nights — UNESCO World Heritage town and the heart of the trip. Alms-giving ceremony at dawn, Kuang Si waterfalls (with the turquoise bear rescue pools), Royal Palace Museum, Pak Ou Caves by slow boat, night market, and the most beautiful morning market in Southeast Asia.
  • Vang Vieng, 3 nights — limestone karst adventure base. Blue Lagoon swimming, kayaking the Nam Song River, Tham Chang cave exploration, hot air balloon ride (seasonal), and tubing for older kids. Vang Vieng has cleaned up dramatically since its backpacker party days — it's now a genuine family adventure destination.
  • Vientiane, 2 nights — the world's most relaxed capital. Pha That Luang golden stupa, Patuxai victory arch, Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan), COPE Visitor Centre (Laos's UXO history told age-appropriately), and Mekong riverside sunset.

Why Luang Prabang gets 5 nights: it's not a "see the sights and leave" city. The alms ceremony, waterfalls, caves, cooking classes, and weaving villages fill five days without rushing. It's also where the best family hotels are, so it works as a comfortable base.

How the Mid-Range Template Breaks Down (USD)

Accommodation (~USD $1,500 for 10 nights)

  • Luang Prabang, 5 nights — $180/night for a boutique hotel in the old town peninsula. Target: Sofitel Luang Prabang, Avani+, Villa Maly, Maison Dalabua, 3 Nagas (Heritage).
  • Vang Vieng, 3 nights — $120/night riverside bungalow or hotel. Target: Riverside Boutique Resort, Vieng Tara Villa, Silver Naga Hotel.
  • Vientiane, 2 nights — $100/night near the Mekong. Target: Settha Palace Hotel, Crowne Plaza Vientiane, Lao Poet Hotel.

Total: USD $1,500 (~AU$2,355). Laos accommodation is excellent value — boutique hotels that would cost $400+/night in Bali or Thailand run $120–180 here.

Flights from Australia (~USD $2,400 shoulder)

  • SYD/MEL → Luang Prabang (LPQ) via Bangkok (Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways) or Hanoi (Vietnam Airlines): AU$800–1,200 per person return shoulder, AU$1,400–2,000 peak. Family shoulder total: AU$3,200–4,800 (~USD $2,040–3,060).
  • Vientiane (VTE) → Bangkok for the return leg (short hop on Lao Airlines or Bangkok Airways, then onward to Australia).
  • Template assumption: USD $2,400 shoulder (~AU$3,770) open-jaw family fare via Bangkok.

Overland transport (~USD $300)

  • Luang Prabang → Vang Vieng minivan: $15/pp = $60 family (6 hrs through stunning mountain scenery — stop at Nong Khiaw viewpoint)
  • Vang Vieng → Vientiane minivan: $10/pp = $40 family (4 hrs)
  • Local tuk-tuks and songthaews: $200 across the trip

Total: USD $300 (~AU$471)

Daily family budget (~USD $500 for 10 days)

  • Food: Lao meals $3–5/person, French-Lao fusion $10–15/person. Family of 4 mid-range = $30–50/day.
  • Local transport (tuk-tuk, shared songthaew): $10–15/day
  • Water + fruit shakes + snacks: $5/day
  • Template: $50/day × 10 = $500 (~AU$785). Laos is genuinely cheap for daily spending — cheaper than anywhere else in the catalogue except Cambodia.

Activities & entry fees (~USD $500)

  • Kuang Si Waterfalls: $20/adult, $10/child + transport $40/family = $90
  • Pak Ou Caves slow boat: $25/person = $100
  • Royal Palace Museum: $30/adult = $60
  • Blue Lagoon Vang Vieng: $10/person = $40
  • Tham Chang Cave: $6/person = $24
  • Kayaking Nam Song: $30/person = $120 (half-day family trip)
  • Buddha Park: $5/person = $20
  • Cooking class Luang Prabang: $30/person = $120 (kids usually half price)
  • Miscellaneous: ~$26

Total: USD $500 (~AU$785)

When to Go

Best months: November–February. This is Laos's cool dry season — 25–30°C days, almost no rain, low humidity, clear skies for Kuang Si and Vang Vieng scenery. March–May is burning season (smoky haze over Luang Prabang). June–October is monsoon — Kuang Si is spectacular in full flow but roads flood and Vang Vieng activities shut down.

Australian school holidays: July is monsoon — not ideal. September/October is late monsoon but improving. April school holidays catch the end of the dry season but it's hot (35°C+). The sweet spot is a special trip outside school holidays if you can swing it, or Christmas/January.

Tips for Families

  1. Alms ceremony respect — the dawn alms-giving in Luang Prabang is sacred, not a photo opportunity. Watch quietly from across the road. Don't buy the tourist sticky rice (it's often stale and disrespectful). If you want to participate, buy from the morning market before 5:30am.
  2. Kuang Si — go early or go late — the turquoise pools are magical at 8:30am (opening) or after 2pm. Midday is packed with tour buses. The bear rescue centre at the entrance is worth 30 minutes.
  3. Cash is king — Laos is still heavily cash-based, especially outside Luang Prabang. ATMs exist but charge $3–5 per withdrawal. Bring USD or THB and exchange at BCEL bank for the best rates.
  4. The minivan to Vang Vieng is spectacular — the road winds through limestone mountains. Sit on the right side for the best views. Motion sickness medication is worth having for kids.
  5. UXO awareness — Laos is the most heavily bombed country per capita. Stick to marked paths on hikes and visit the COPE centre in Vientiane — it tells the story age-appropriately and kids learn something important.
